When tradgedy strikes…*RIP*
I’m not sure how many of my blog followers keep up with the current news in Muay Thai-MMA-and the other combative sports (I’m sure a fair amount of you do)
Sadly, a few days ago at this years IKF Championships (an Amateur event) another fighter passed away while in the ring. Female fighter Adrienne Simmons was knocked unconscious during her bout in Florida, USA. Suffering a Brain Stem, her brain began to bleed and swell causing her to fall into a coma and she passed away shortly after, at the age of 34.
Adrienne won a Silver medal at this exact tournament in 2008. She had just started at Emory for a master’s degree in education and was working with underprivileged children in the Atlanta area. She really was one of those people that wanted to positively change the world in an effort to help people live a better life.
A fund has been set up to help pay for the medical and funeral arrangements from this tragic loss. Those of you wishing to donate, your money will be greatly appreciated and will be supporting a family in need. To donate click here
Joe Miller wrote a behind the scene description of the night–well worth reading.
Any one competing in Combat Sports realizes the risk of injury, or permanent damage done to the body, but nobody anticipates death. Prayers and condolences go out to the surviving family, and Adrienne’s boyfriend Chike Lindsay-Ajudua.
