Argh…That’s a munkee wrench in my plans this weekend!!
Dang.
Something must be cursed with Macau and the sport of MMA. Macau is the ‘Las Vegas’ of Asia–full of large MGM Grand, Venetian, Hardrock, style hotels with all of the gambling you see in the states including cards, dice, and machines.
It seems like a logical place for MMA—but lately…it’s been the city of busts.
Art Of War–China’s number 1 MMA promotion traveled to Macau in September of 2009..and the card was rumored to have lost a sizable amount of cash due to low ticket sales. AOW went on to do one more show in November of 2009—but haven’t promoted any events in 2010–and as of now have not released any dates for 2011 shows.
I-1 promoted a few MMA matches in Macau during their Muay Thai events, before the ‘Fury FC’ promotion officially started promoting the fights. During the 2nd promotion the event was canceled, leaving International fighters stranded without airfare or hotel rooms as the promoter was accused of stealing tons of cash—read about that here––
**Now**…The DEEP-Mayhem in Macau event…which was suppose to be the Japanese MMA promotions first journey into China has been canceled—4 days before the event! I just bought my tickets to Macau 48 hours ago–and they are non-refundable.
…The main reason for making the trip was to network during the weekend of fights–as several influential figures in the Asian MMA Scene were scheduled to attend the event.
I’ve spoken to several friends who are in the same situation as me–who already purchased travel…but now won’t be able to attend the fights. Luckily not all is lost though–and the Macau De Copa will still go as scheduled including the 8 man Nogi Superfight tournament. I’m going to be meeting up with Victor Cui of Martial Combat, as well as a couple of other contacts–and the excuse to gamble is never a bad thing…lol….BUT–I am sticking to my no ‘adult drinks for a month’ challenge.
