Am I about to get in a fight?!

You have types of fights.  Water fights? Food Fights?…even the dreaded “Fist Fight”

…What makes a “fist fight” so different from a food fight? what about a water fight?

Umm…if I have to answer that for you…you’ve probably never been in a ”real fight”…lol.

Nothing wrong with that…but follow me.

Before a fight, you have all sorts of anxiety, nervousness…etc.  You could have a bully push you in the stomach and tell you to meet them by the flag pole at 4pm—and your entire day ruined.  You can’t eat at lunch, you fail a math test because you’re worried about 4pm…only to walk to the bus and find out the bully is nowhere to be found.  You lost an entire day, when the Bully never even intended to show up!

Fighting…especially as a sport…is very similar to this.  Fighting as an “instinct” is a bit different.  If you are protecting yourself, you rarely have time to actually think about your actions.  With the sport behind fighting, you have the entire emotional build up leading to the competition.  Imagine knowing for weeks that the bully was going to be at the flag pole in 4 weeks.  What would you do? How many sit-ups? How many drills? Would you eat different?…somehow I am picturing some of my friends looking like Kevin James in one of the world’s cheesiest movies…lol

While I don’t consider a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ”MATCH” a “FIGHT”, I can easily see the comparison.  Truth be told after 3, 4 matches I have left BJJ tournaments with more bumps and dinks than many MMA matches.

Unlike “MMA” you compete against your own rank.  Meaning a White belt faces a White Belt, a Black Belt against a Black Belt. So at my level, you are pretty much guaranteeing some game time :)

While you know your not going to get ”PUNCHED” ‘”KNEED” “ELBOWED” in a BJJ Match, you understand that you are going to be pushed to the limit keeping a black belt from passing your guard, while trying to pass theirs.

The entire ”Bully” idea of a fist fight still exists though…maybe even more ”heightened” than MMA.  In BJJ you are representing your academy.  While “MMA” fighters still represent their school, at the end of the day BIG NAME fighters like Rashad Evans, Randy Couture, GSP have changed “teams” several times along the way.  Something just seems more pure about amateur sports.  Like College Basketball and Football in America, something that seems pure before the money of the NBA and NFL corrupted the product is associated with BJJ Competitions.

While the BJJ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS are getting set to go down in America, I will be finishing my camp for the Abu Dhabi Nogi Cup, Looking at the Brackets, it appears I will be facing several good Brazilian grapplers.

Getting in some work with Khalid and Abe today, we got in a solid 45 minutes of grappling, fine tuning some strategy along the way.  Was some good work.  While I don’t think BJJ matches should be called “Fights”—….

I will tell you…they are different in “Sport” than Basketball or Football…LOL.

Even though I can’t play Soccer, I’d still jump in a game.  How many of you reading would Jump into a Match with a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt….from Brazil…if you didn’t know what you were doing :P

Anyways…Tonight was some good flow rolling with Khalid and Abe leading up to the trip to Abu Dhabi next weekend.
